THE ART & JOY OF WEAVING: A PERSONAL JOURNEY
Weaving holds a special place in my heart, and its roots in my life can be traced back to the skillful hands of my Great Grandmother, a dedicated knitter turned crocheter due to failing eyesight. Her passion for creating with yarn ignited a spark within me that has grown into a profound love for the art of weaving.
As a child, I was captivated by the mesmerizing sight of women spinning wool at a national historic site, an experience that left an indelible mark on my soul. Years later, my husband gifted me my first spinning wheel, opening the door to a world of possibilities and leading me to the enchanting realm of weaving.
Weaving is more than just a craft; it's a symphony of colors, textures, fibers, and history. The multitude of weaving patterns and fiber options available allow for endless creative exploration. Each project is an opportunity to blend artistry with the meticulous steps of calculation, organization, and perseverance.
Drawing upon my corporate experience, I approach weaving with methodical precision, infusing the process with a balance of creativity and structure. The act of weaving itself becomes are ward, the culmination of meticulous planning and preparation.
When embarking on a new project, I carefully consider the elements at play–from the desired outcome and size to the type of fiber and chosen pattern. The preparation involved in setting up the loom can often surpass the time spent actually weaving, but it's a labor of love that enhances the sense of accomplishment when the shuttle finally takes flight.
Beyond the personal joy derived from creating tangible pieces of art, I find solace in the rich history woven into every fabric. Textiles, and weaving in particular, have been integral to human history, symbolizing art, culture, religion, and power. From the cradle to the grave, textiles surround us, telling the story of our lives through the interplay of fiber, color, and pattern.
In essence, weaving is not just a hobby for me; it's a celebration of tradition, a connection to generations past, and a testament to the enduring beauty of craftsmanship. It allows me to engage my hands, heart, and mind in a harmonious dance of creation, ensuring that the art of weaving remains a vibrant thread in the tapestry of my life. Ultimately it is my life’s work!
